Less than 24 hours after Manhattan's season ended in the quarterfinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament, the Jaspers will have a new leader in 2016-17, as head coach John Olenowski's contract was not renewed by the college.
Olenowski, who patrolled the sidelines in Riverdale for seven years, finishes with a 92-128 record in his tenure. He guided Manhattan to a 12-win improvement from last season, tied for the best such mark in the nation, taking a Jasper team that won just three games in 2014-15 to a 15-16 record this year, and coached sophomore point guard Amani Tatum into the MAAC's Defensive Player of the Year.
A national search for his replacement will begin immediately, although after the season Manhattan just enjoyed, news of Olenowski's dismissal comes as somewhat of a surprise, especially with a young nucleus headlined by Tatum and fellow sophomores Kayla Grimme, Nyasha Irizarry and Taylor Williams, coming back for two more years.
More information on this story will be posted as it becomes available.
