“Urgency. I thought urgency, togetherness. I still don’t like the fact that we’re still holding onto the basketball a little too much. We’re dribbling, just dribbling and going nowhere, but I’ll be honest with you, man: I was really nervous about this game. I watched these guys play against Penn State and I watched them play against NJIT, and (Chris Casey’s) done an unbelievable job. The young guys are playing really well. I thought we had a good mental day the last couple days, but I’ll be honest with you guys: My head is all messed up because of Jah right now. I feel awful.”
On Jahseem Felton:
“It just didn’t look good with his knee. I’m not a doctor, I don’t know exactly what it is, but watching on film, it didn’t look good. It didn’t look good. The whole team went in the locker room, in the training room, gave him a hug and told him they love him. But yeah, it didn’t look good. I’m praying for him.”
On forcing turnovers:
“I thought we did solid. I learned. Like I said before, I thought we did a bad job last game of not seeing how the game was being played. I learned from watching that today. We didn’t trap as much, we just pressured them full-court and in the half-court and kind of wore them down. I didn’t do a lot of trapping because we did that in the last game, and they got threes and threes and threes and threes. And for some reason in the second half for two possessions, and they got two threes. But I thought for the most part, the game plan was solid.”
On Mike Williams, A.J. Staton-McCray and Elijah Fisher:
“We’re still learning. Everybody’s still learning to play with each other. It’s still crazy early, you get too much with your team before the season starts, but for the most part, I think we’ve done a good job. I thought early on, we missed a lot of bunnies. I thought we could have had more assists…we missed a lot of layups. But like I said, it’s a work in progress, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.”
On depth overcoming foul trouble:
“They were calling it tight today. They were calling it tight, but you gotta adjust to the officials. Early in the season, it’s gonna be like that. When you get to Big East play, some of these fouls, you’re gonna be wishing that they were fouls for us, but they’re not gonna call it. But I want to play faster, I want to play quicker, I want to not call as many plays because it’s exhausting when you’ve got a guard like Budd, and today was good for Trey. Trey’s getting his rhythm back, his timing back…he was out for almost two weeks. So that’s why I wanted Trey to play more in the second half, plus we got a game on Thursday, so I gotta be careful with guys’ minutes. We just played Friday, we played today, we play Thursday, so I just gotta be careful now. I want the second group to get some more minutes because we’re gonna need them to help us.”
On Staton-McCray:
“Yeah, I got on him yesterday and the day before. We need him. He’s an older guy, he’s an established guy — before Miami, he was at Samford, he had a great career there, he took them to the tournament — so I expect a lot from him. He’s one of our leaders. Through the first two games, he’s had his shot affect him and I thought today, he did a better job. Even when his shot wasn’t going, he did some other things for us, and that’s something I’ve been on him about.”
On second-half adjustments:
“Share the ball and get out. I thought we didn’t do a good job of pushing the ball, but give them credit. They were scoring. I thought we got some stops and we got a chance to get out in transition, and I think we’re at our best in that.”
On contesting shots:
“We didn’t want them to get no threes on us. They’re a really good shooting team. The game plan was if we cut their threes and not let them get offensive rebounds, then we had a good chance of winning. Both games they played, they dominated the offensive glass against Penn State and against NJIT, so keep them off the boards. In the first half, they beat us on the boards, so we made adjustments at halftime. I thought in the second half, we did a lot better.”
On Najai Hines:
“He’s learning. Don’t get silly fouls early, stay on the court. What people don’t understand about Najai is he’s very unselfish. I’m trying to get him to get on the block and get the ball in, and he wants to get off the block and throw passes. I’m like, ‘my man, I need you on the block.’ He’s a work in progress, man, but the one thing he can do is he’s playing hard and he defends. That’s what I want.”
On Seton Hall being coachable:
“It’s coming. Like I said, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. It’s coming. It’s a work in progress, we’ve still got a long way to go. If Jah played on two feet, that’d have probably never happened. Things happen in games, but yeah, I think they responded well. I’m on them, but I also let them play, so it’s a give and take thing.”
An update on Godswill Erheriene:
“We gonna do this every time? I don’t know. No one asked Friday? You sure? I’m sorry, Jerry. It’s the same. Like I said, I think it’s gonna be a minute. It hasn’t been no different than anything else.”
