AVONDALE, N.C. — According to an article on SB Nation, there are currently five pairs of fathers coaching their sons in Division I basketball.
Now, you can add a sixth to the list.
That’s because Bryson Luther has signed to play for his dad, Jeremy Luther, at Gardner-Webb.
Jeremy Luther admits that recruiting his son to play for the Runnin’ Bulldogs was both easy and challenging at the same time.
“It was unique for sure,” he admitted. “Bryson has been around the program for so long that he knows everything there is to know. Most of the time, you only show the good parts to recruits to try to get them to come. Bryson knows the good, the bad and the ugly about our program, and he decided to come anyway.”
For Bryson, however, the choice was simple.
“It was always going to be Gardner-Webb,” Bryson said. “I did not even really look at any other schools. I want to play for my dad.”
Bryson Luther is not only joining the Runnin’ Bulldogs to play for his dad, he also brings talent to a team that is looking to replace players who have either graduated or entered the transfer portal. Luther finished his career at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (about 15 miles from the GWU campus) with a program record 1,341 career points. As a senior in the 2025-26 season, he averaged 15.5 points per game and shot 38 percent from three-point range. Thanks to Luther’s efforts, the TJCA Gryphons made a run to the North Carolina state championship game, played at Wake Forest University. Even so, Jeremy Luther was very honest about his son’s role for GWU, particularly as a freshman.
“He is probably going to be the third or fourth option at guard,” the coach said. “He is going to spend his time watching and learning behind other players.”
While the recruiting class and portal players coming to GWU is not yet complete, Jeremy Luther is hopeful that the talent coming in can help the Runnin’ Bulldogs improve on the four wins they garnered in the recently concluded 2025-26 season.
“There were four main guys that we wanted to keep,” he shared. “Three of them jumped in the portal. A couple are still in there and we are trying our best to get them back. Then we have some really talented players coming in. I’m really excited about this season.”
Bryson is still looking forward to being on the team, no matter what his role is.
“This may sound weird, but I’m really looking forward to getting yelled at by dad,” he said with a laugh.
“My wife and I have already had to talk about that,” Luther admitted. “When I yell at Bryson, it’s as a coach to a player because I want to get the best out of him, not as a father to a son. There is a difference. I am looking forward to having him with me on those bus rides and then being able to see all of his games without much travel time. Not many fathers get the opportunity to spend everyday with their son when they are in college. I am truly blessed.”
