Sha Sounds Off: Providence

On Seton Hall’s practice form and execution:
“I think just paying attention to detail. They’ve got three guys that could go on 10-0 runs at any time. Just paying attention to detail and then understanding this is one of the best environments in college basketball. To come here and play the way we played, and defend the way we did, it’s a good step for us.”

On TJ Simpkins:
“That’s our team. I tell people all the time: We don’t have a stud, we’ve just got guys that, when multiple guys are not playing well, somebody else can step up. TJ is a guy that’s been doing it for us all year. He’s been doing it for us all year, and how about the way Steph played? I mean, man! To be, really, the only big out there — give Godswill credit, he tried to play today a little bit — but to be the only big out there and come up the way he came up, that’s impressive.”

On Stephon Payne:
“It’s gotta be encouraging for him. It’s encouraging for us, and that just goes to show you, like I said, any night, you’ve got different guys stepping up for us. And Steph’s been playing great for us all year, but to do that in his first Big East game, on the road at this place, is pretty good. I just told him, ‘don’t worry about not fouling, just be aggressive. I’ll get you some spurts, I’ll get you some minutes out there. We still need you to anchor our defense.’ I knew he was gonna be out there. They run all these high pick-and-rolls, so I’ve got him out there chasing ball screens all day long. But yeah, he stepped up today.”

On Budd Clark:
“He’s learning, learning on the fly. The last two plays, we ran that same play against USC and he gave the ball up to Steph for a layup. Today, he kept it, hit a pull-up jump shot, then he kept it a little longer and got TJ the three. So that’s learning, that’s being in the gym watching film and learning. It’s steps, man. We’re making some steps, man, making baby steps.”

On Tuesday’s game against Villanova:
“You know what? Obviously Tuesday is Tuesday, right? You don’t want to look too much into it. Obviously it’s a big game, you’ve got Coach coming back to his house. He did a great job here at Seton Hall, nobody can take that from him. I’ve got a lot of respect for him, he did a lot for me in my career, so it’s gonna be a good game, but I’m not really focused on that yet. I’ll focus on that starting tomorrow night. Tonight, I’ve just gotta focus on these guys and these guys enjoy this, and then go to work on Sunday.”

On working the ball inside more:
“I’ve been trying to throw it in there. Our guys gotta seal better and post up a little more, and I thought today, they did it. We got the ball in with Elijah, we got it obviously with Steph, and I think the more that they could do what they do, it opens up everything.”

On Elijah Fisher’s evolution:
“He’s making steps, right? He hit a big three today, he’s playing really good defense for us, and that really wasn’t his forte coming in. He was a scorer, but he’s giving up something, part of his game for the betterment of the team, and that’s what — if you want to be a good team, and we’re trying to take steps to becoming that — things like that have to happen. People gotta give up something. He gave up part of his offense to us, and I’m grateful for that.”

An update on Najai Hines:
“No, I’ll learn more once we get back.”
