On adjusting from slow first-half starts:
“I think the biggest thing is that I shortened the rotation, to be honest with you. I knew we were going to struggle in the first half playing nine guys as many minutes as I’m playing them. I knew we were going to struggle, it’s hard to play that many guys that many minutes and expect them to play and be in rhythm and kind of flow with it, but I’m still trying to figure this out.”
On Kadary Richmond:
“He’s progressing nicely. He’s starting to practice the way he needs to kind of sustain a level where he has the ball in his hands that much, and I think that’s been the biggest thing, he’s really worked hard the last three weeks of really sustaining practice and really working. I think he’s starting to get confidence in what we’re doing and what we’re looking for. I think these guys are starting to get used to him playing at the point. They know he’s gonna pass the basketball, he’s not going to take a ton of shots. I think he’s progressing really well, I think he’s — again, he’s taking the steps that we need him to take and I think the more he understands the value in each possession and how important each possession is, I think he’ll continue to grow.”
On Jared Rhoden as a leader:
“Jared’s doing great. He’s doing really good with that.”
On a more efficient second half:
“I think the double-edged sword is just getting these guys used to playing minutes, shorter minutes in the first half. I do think we can wear down teams, especially with our fours and fives, but it’s hard to be 7-foot-1 and sit for seven minutes, then get right back into it. I think that’s what I’m struggling with, a lot more than anything, is with these big guys. (With) guards, it’s easy, you can pop up, pop down, you’re ready to go, you have the ball in your hands. Big guys for the most part, they don’t have the ball in their hands nearly as much, so I’m trying to get these guys to be able to just kind of find their rhythm and let their rhythm come to them. That’s one of the biggest things, that’s kind of the double-edged sword.”
On Myles Cale’s availability:
“As of right now, Myles is still game-to-game, so I have no update on MC. He’ll be back by next week, he’s been working out pretty good. He wasn’t cleared to practice today, so I have no idea.”
On how to overcome slow starts:
“I’ve gotta talk to them about that. I think we’re playing too many guys early in the game. Our rotation’s a little bit too long, so I think it’s more we’re having a hard time finding an offensive rhythm. Defensively, it’s been great, it helps us and I think it helps us in the second half playing so many guys, but offensively, we’re having a hard time finding a rhythm early in games with so many guys coming in and out.”
On defensive adjustments after halftime:
“We pressed. I know if we pressed early in the game and got after it, we’d probably end up in a better rhythm offensively, but that’s not what these games are for. I really want to work on stuff, I just want to work on certain defensive concepts. It’s helped us, but especially on a Wednesday night at 7:00 vs. Wagner, I know how the crowd’s going to be, so it’s always helped us, the press. But at the same time with this team, I need to see lineups, I need to see offensive plays, I need to see stuff. So that’s why I don’t press in the first half. It drives everybody nuts — it drives me nuts — but for the most part, I know what the outcome of the game is going to be. It’s a matter of, are we getting better? Are we helping each other?
